Payday Super in Odoo: What Australian Employers Must Fix Before July 2027
Payday Super in Odoo is now a live compliance issue for every Australian employer that runs payroll or payroll accounting in Odoo. Since 1 July 2026, superannuation guarantee contributions must reach the employee's fund within seven business days of each payday, not once a quarter. If your Odoo setup still batches super quarterly, you are carrying risk on every pay run.
The good news is that the ATO is treating 2026 to 2027 as a transition year. The less comfortable news is that Single Touch Payroll (STP) reports that do not include the new super fields will be rejected from 1 July 2027. That gives Odoo users a clear window to fix their payroll configuration, and it is closing.
This guide explains what changed, how Payday Super affects the three common Odoo payroll setups in Australia, and what to check in your system before the transition year ends.
What changed on 1 July 2026?
Payday Super replaced the old quarterly super cycle. According to RSM Australia and Clayton Utz, the main changes are:
- Seven business day rule. SG contributions are due within seven business days of each payday. New employees get 20 business days for their first contribution.
- Qualifying earnings (QE) replace OTE. QE is now the base for both the SG and the SG charge. It includes all commissions and salary sacrificed amounts that would otherwise be QE.
- A tougher SG charge. Late or missed payments attract the shortfall, notional earnings at the general interest charge rate compounded daily, and an administrative uplift starting at 60%.
- New STP fields. Employers must report both QE and super liability through STP.
- No more Small Business Superannuation Clearing House. The free ATO clearing house closed at the end of June 2026, so small employers now need a payroll integrated or commercial clearing solution.
The SG rate itself stays at 12%.
Why the July 2027 deadline matters
Under the ATO's risk rated compliance approach (PCG 2026/1), employers are placed in low, medium or high risk zones for the 2026 to 2027 year. Occasional late payments that are corrected quickly are likely to be treated as low risk. Employers that make no real attempt to pay super on each payday are not.
The second date is more technical but just as important. Clayton Utz notes that STP reports which do not include both QE and super liability will be rejected from 1 July 2027. For an Odoo user, that is a hard system deadline: if your payroll localisation, connector or custom module cannot produce those fields, you cannot lodge.
How Payday Super affects the three Odoo payroll setups
Most Australian Odoo customers run payroll in one of three ways. Each one carries a different Payday Super risk.
Setup | How super flows | Payday Super risk | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|---|
Odoo Payroll with the Australian localisation | Pay runs, STP and super are calculated inside Odoo | Depends on your Odoo version and edition supporting QE, super liability reporting and per pay run super payments | Businesses with simple awards on a recent Odoo version |
External payroll synced to Odoo | Employment Hero (KeyPay), Xero Payroll or similar runs payroll and STP; journals sync to Odoo Accounting | Payroll provider handles most rules; risk sits in the sync, the super payable account and cash flow | Businesses with complex Modern Awards or many casual staff |
Marketplace or custom modules | Community or third party modules calculate pay; STP and super files go through a separate provider | Highest. You need to confirm each module has been updated for QE and Payday Super | Businesses on Odoo Community or older versions |
Odoo Payroll with the Australian localisation
Recent Odoo Enterprise versions include Australian payroll features, and the Odoo 20 release continues that work. Even so, coverage varies by version. Odoo partner ECOSIRE points out that native Odoo payroll cannot model Modern Awards with penalty rates and allowances, and that many deployments pair Odoo with a specialist payroll provider for complex cases. If you run payroll inside Odoo, ask your partner to confirm in writing that your version reports QE and super liability through STP and supports super payments per pay run.
External payroll synced to Odoo
This is the most common pattern for award heavy businesses in hospitality, retail, healthcare and construction. Your payroll provider is responsible for the Payday Super calculations and STP. Odoo still matters, because it holds the general ledger and the cash. Connectors such as the Employment Hero connector modules on the Odoo Apps Store sync work entries and rosters, but you should check exactly which journals and liabilities flow back into Odoo after every pay run.
Marketplace or custom modules
Some Odoo Community users rely on marketplace payroll modules. Some of these have been updated for Payday Super. For example, one Australian payroll module for Odoo 19 lists QE based super, the Payday Super maximum base and a remittance summary by fund, but hands STP lodgement and SuperStream files to your own provider. Read the module description carefully and test it before relying on it.
Your Odoo Payday Super checklist
Whichever setup you use, work through these checks before 30 June 2027.
- Map every pay code to QE. Review salary rules or pay categories so commissions, salary sacrifice and allowances are classified correctly as QE or not.
- Confirm STP reports QE and super liability. Run a test pay event and check the payload, or ask your payroll provider for confirmation.
- Pay super per pay run. Replace any quarterly batch with a payment flow tied to each pay run, through a payroll integrated clearing house or your provider.
- Reconcile the super payable account every pay run. In Odoo Accounting, the superannuation liability should clear within days, not build up for a quarter. A growing balance is an early warning sign.
- Set due date alerts. Use Odoo automation rules or activities to flag any super payment that is not confirmed within five business days of payday, leaving a buffer before the seven day limit.
- Validate fund and member details. Missing USI or member numbers are a common reason for rejected contributions. Clean up employee records now.
- Plan for new starters. Build the 20 business day rule into your onboarding workflow in Odoo Employees.
- Review your cash flow forecast. Weekly or fortnightly payroll now means weekly or fortnightly super outflows. Update your Odoo cash flow and budget reports so the money is there.
Watch the licence side too
From the September 2026 pricing change, active Employees app records without a login can count as Light Users in Odoo's billing. Payroll only staff therefore affect your Odoo subscription. Do not archive current employees to save licence fees, because those records support payroll and STP. We cover the details in our guide to Odoo pricing in Australia for 2026.
The bottom line
Payday Super turns super from a quarterly task into part of every pay run. For Odoo users, compliance depends on three things: payroll that calculates QE correctly, STP that reports the new fields, and an accounting setup that pays and reconciles super within seven business days. The ATO's transition year gives you room to fix gaps, but the 1 July 2027 STP deadline is firm.
Rules, rates and ATO guidance can change, so confirm details with your payroll provider, tax adviser or the ATO before making changes. If you need help reviewing your Odoo payroll setup, connectors or accounting flows, ONEXT's ERP and Odoo team can audit your configuration and implement the fixes alongside your accountant.
