Shopify Agentic Commerce in Australia: Why ChatGPT Checkout Isn't Here Yet
Shopify agentic commerce in Australia is not as simple as the headlines suggest. In March 2026, Shopify switched on Agentic Storefronts for "millions" of merchants. Products can now appear inside ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity. For a store that only sells within Australia, though, the checkout part of that story mostly does not apply yet.
Australian shoppers are not waiting for the platforms to catch up. Australia Post's eCommerce Report 2026 found that 62% of shoppers already use AI and 32% use it for shopping advice. So the opportunity is real, but in 2026 it is about being found, not being bought from inside a chatbot.
This article explains what is live, what is not, and the steps Australian merchants should take while AI checkout eligibility catches up.
What are Shopify Agentic Storefronts?
Agentic Storefronts let AI assistants find, recommend and sell products from your Shopify store. Shopify's own Australian guide explains that product data flows through Shopify Catalog. Catalog automatically broadcasts standardised product information to agentic channels, and orders arrive in your Shopify admin with channel attribution.
Two pieces of plumbing sit underneath:
- Shopify Catalog: a structured, enriched version of your product data that AI agents can read.
- Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP): an open standard for AI-driven transactions, co-developed by Shopify and Google.
Shopify kept building on this in its Summer '26 Editions. Agency Ambaum's summary reports that Shopify said catalog data it syndicates "drives 2x more conversion in AI chats". It also added a Global Catalog MCP server, so AI agents can search products across the Shopify ecosystem.
Shopify says the commercial pull is already measurable. In Shopify's Q2 2026 results, AI-driven traffic and orders each tripled year on year. 75% of AI-attributed purchases came from outside Shopify's top 100 product categories.
What can Australian Shopify stores actually do today?
This is where the fine print matters. As of May 2026, analysis by Australian agency Predicta Digital set out the eligibility by channel:
AI channel | Store location | Buyer location | How checkout works |
|---|---|---|---|
ChatGPT | Any, including Australia | Must be in the US | Redirects to the store's own checkout |
Microsoft Copilot | Any, including Australia | Must be in the US | Checkout inside the AI interface |
Google AI Mode / Gemini | US stores only | US buyers | Early access, inside the AI interface |
Perplexity | Any | No stated restriction | Shopper referred to the store |
The practical result: an Australian store that only sells to Australians sits outside the direct checkout layer for ChatGPT, Copilot and Google's AI surfaces. A store that already ships to the US can take part in ChatGPT and Copilot for its US customers. Shopify's guide confirms the US-shopper condition for automatic ChatGPT discovery.
The ChatGPT side has also been changing. Ecommerce News Australia reported in March 2026 that OpenAI scaled back Instant Checkout, its in-chat buying feature launched in September 2025, and moved purchases back to retailer websites and apps. In the same report, Shopify reportedly said only about a dozen of its merchants were live on any agentic commerce platform at that point.
Treat any article claiming "Aussie shoppers can now buy your products inside ChatGPT" with caution. As of October 2026, that is not the general case.

How are Australians using AI to shop?
The gap between platform rules and shopper behaviour is the reason to act now. Two Australian data sets point the same way:
- Australia Post: 62% of shoppers use AI, 32% use it for shopping advice, and 1 in 2 believe everyone will use AI for online shopping in future.
- Navigators AI Brandscape 2026, via Ecommerce News Australia: 38% of Australians use AI tools to complement or replace search, 39% use AI to help make buying decisions, and 31% act on AI recommendations.
Businesses are moving faster than consumers. Australia Post found 44% of Australian businesses advocate agentic commerce against 16% of shoppers, and 85% of businesses are preparing for an agentic future. In its 2026 trends summary, Australia Post expects AI to influence up to 30% of eCommerce transactions by 2030.
In short, Australians are using AI to research and shortlist products today, even though most cannot yet complete a local purchase inside the chat. Whether your store gets recommended depends on how well AI tools understand your products.
Why is product data the real agentic commerce strategy?
Every AI channel, whether it checks out in-chat or refers a shopper to your site, depends on clean, structured product information. Commentators quoted by Ecommerce News Australia made the same point: incomplete or generic feeds reduce discoverability, and investment in structured product data pays off even if agentic checkout grows more slowly than predicted.
For a Shopify store, that means:
- Complete product titles and descriptions that state what the product is, who it is for, and key specifications, not just brand slogans.
- Variants and options set up properly (size, colour, material) instead of hiding them in description text.
- Identifiers such as GTINs and SKUs filled in wherever they exist.
- Metafields for structured attributes like dimensions, compatibility, care instructions and certifications.
- Accurate stock and pricing, because AI channels pull from live data and stale information erodes trust fast.
None of this is wasted effort. The same work improves Google Shopping feeds, on-site search and filtering, which already drive revenue for Australian stores today.
What should Australian merchants do now?
Your plan depends on where you sell.
If you sell only within Australia
- Audit product data quality across your top 100 products first, then roll the fixes out catalog-wide.
- Keep AI crawlers and structured data open so your products can be cited in AI answers, even without in-chat checkout.
- Check Perplexity and Shopify Catalog settings in your admin, since Perplexity has no stated buyer restriction.
- Set up an AI referral segment in analytics now, so you have a baseline when Australian eligibility expands.
If you already ship to the US
- Review the Agentic Storefronts settings in Shopify admin and confirm which channels are active.
- Turn direct checkout on or off per channel in Settings, Sales Channels, based on your margin and fulfilment capacity.
- Make sure US shipping rates, duties messaging and returns policies are clear, because AI channels will surface them.
- Watch channel attribution on orders to see which AI surfaces convert.
For every store
- Assign an owner for product data, not just for marketing campaigns.
- Review the Shopify changelog monthly. Agentic features have shipped in almost every Edition this year.

The bottom line
Agentic commerce on Shopify is real and growing fast. AI orders tripled in Q2 2026. For most Australian merchants, though, the live opportunity in October 2026 is AI-driven discovery, not AI checkout. ChatGPT and Copilot checkout still depend on US buyers, and Google's AI surfaces are US-only.
That makes this the right moment to prepare rather than wait. Stores with clean, structured product data will be the ones AI assistants recommend now, and the first to benefit when eligibility reaches Australian shoppers.
